All concerned citizens: Please help determine the future of historic Adams Road!

Only one option

At the June 17th Adams Road Community Update Meeting, the Oakland County Road Commission, City of Rochester Hills and Oakland University revealed five options being considered.

In a nutshell: the only option which preserves the integrity of historic Adams Road, the ONLY option which leaves the National Historic Landmark (NHL) of Meadow Brook Hall and all of its assets as listed in the 2012 NHL designation of Meadow Brook Hall is the No Build Approach.

When the NHL designation was made, the landmark had to meet rigorous criteria. That designation was granted to protect Meadow Brook Hall as an NHL and crosses Adams Road past its stone wall that once led into the Meadow Brook estate, to the Meadow Brook Hall Workers’ Cottages A-D, along the east side of Adams, and the stairs workers used to walk to Meadow Brook Hall.

To add a lane or more of roadway through that area would  permanently damage a national historic landmark. Any wholesale widening through that historic area, north of Avon and south of Hillendale, will destroy the setting. It will forever diminish a national historic landmark!

The three stakeholders and their consulting firms seem to have omitted a less-invasive, viable option that would not only protect this national historic landmark, but move traffic more efficiently and safely, as well as recognize the history, beauty and integrity of the east end of Oakland University.

We need input from this community’s citizens

Please make your voices heard!

Share your views at the project’s public forum (scan the image to the right to visit the site) BEFORE August 1, 2024, our deadline for public comments. In your own words, share the importance of Meadow Brook Hall as an intact National Historic Landmark, as it was intended to remain when named to the registry in 2012.

Considerations, if we are to preserve the national treasure of Meadow Brook Hall and its assets:

• There is no room for a third lane through the National Historic Landmark while maintaining its integrity

Common sense, safety first and minimal impact changes would include:

• Addition of a light at Butler, to improve safety at that intersection

• Addition of a southbound passing lane at Rhineberry

• Evaluation of the cost and feasibility of a longer southbound passing lane at Avon

• Dedicated, short-distance, left-turn-only lanes at Hillendale, Butler and Avon for improved traffic flow

• Request a Michigan State Police speed study be completed for Adams between Hamlin and Walton, with open-minded civic interest by the City of Rochester Hills to consider reduction of speed from Butler to Hillendale by 5-10 mph.

All current proposals to add a lane or three also call to flatten the hills of our beautiful Rochester Hills to improve visual sightlines. All that is needed is additional signage and a 5-mph reduction in speed.

The Adams Road project site is open for public comment until August 1st. Share your views to help shape the future of this area. We have only one chance to preserve and protect our historic, beautiful road, or it is gone forever.
